Share Your Story: Living With Depression
This section of the site explains depression the way doctors understand it: an illness, not a weakness, treatable, and far more common in families like ours than anyone says out loud. But explanations only go so far. What makes a person finally call a therapist is almost never a fact sheet โ it is discovering that someone like them has walked the same darkness and is still here. That is why we are opening this page to your story.
Whose story we are looking for
- People living with depression or anxiety โ what it actually feels like from inside, what you wish your family understood, what getting help was like.
- People in treatment โ the road to the first appointment, what therapy or medication changed, what you would tell the person still hesitating.
- The ones who accompany โ spouses, parents, children, siblings, friends of someone struggling: the view from one seat away, what helped and what didn’t.
- Survivors of loss โ if you have lost someone to suicide and want to speak, your grief has a place here too, told with the care that page describes.
- The ones far from home โ migration and its griefs are half this family’s story. Tell yours.
You do not need to be a writer. A few honest paragraphs about one moment โ the worst night, the first appointment, the phone call that helped โ are worth more than any polished essay.
The ground rules
- Anonymous by default. Stories in this section are published under a pseudonym or initials unless you explicitly ask for your name. Nobody โ in the family or outside it โ needs to know who wrote what. We will never publish contact details.
- Other people’s privacy too. Change or omit the names and identifying details of relatives, doctors, and anyone else in your story. The story is yours; their identities are not.
- True, not medical. Tell what happened to you. We do not publish treatment advice, medication recommendations, or โ ever โ details of suicide methods. Those paragraphs, if sent, will be edited out with care and without judgment.
- All three languages welcome. Spanish, English, or French โ write in your own language; with your permission we will translate your story so it reaches readers in the others too.
- Light editing, your approval. We may trim for length and clarity; nothing is published until you have seen the final version and said yes.
How to send it
Leave a comment below. Comments on this page never appear publicly โ every one is read privately first. Write your story directly in the comment, or just say “I have a story” and how to reach you, and we will get in touch. If you want your comment kept entirely unpublished, say so in the first line and it will be.
One important thing: this page is read with love, but not around the clock โ it is not a crisis line. If you are in danger or thinking about ending your life right now, do not write here first: call or text 988 (US, English and Spanish, 24/7), find your country’s line at findahelpline.com, or call your local emergency number. Then, when the storm has passed โ come back and tell us the story. We want to read it, with you still in it.
Somewhere in this family, tonight, someone believes they are the only one. Your story might be the proof that they are not.
Stories published here reflect their authors’ personal experiences and are not medical advice. If you recognize yourself in them, a qualified health professional is the right first stop.
